Johnson, Director Fruit Inventory Results for Apples Results from the 2011 Michigan Fruit Acreage Inventory have been compiled for apples. There were 825 commercial apple farms at the end of the 2011 season, according to Jay Johnson, Director of the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Apple orchards covered 36,500 acres at the end of 2011, 500 acres fewer than in 2006. Kent, Berrien, Oceana, Ottawa, Van Buren, and Muskegon counties accounted for 68 percent of the acres. Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Gala, Idared, and Jonathan were the five most common varieties, comprising 56 percent of all acres. While there was a slight decline in total acres, the number of trees increased from 2006 through 2011 by 22 percent to 9.24 million. This was due to a large amount of high density planting. Over 2.1 million trees were planted during the 5-year period. All tables on apples are available through the NASS home page at www.nass.usda.gov.
