Johnson, Director August Milk Production Dairy herds in Michigan produced 748 million pounds of milk during August, up 5.4 percent from a year ago, according to Jay Johnson, Director of the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 64.2 pounds, up 1.6 pounds from August 2011. The dairy herd was estimated at 376,000 head for August, up 10,000 from a year earlier. Milk production in the 23 major States during August totaled 15.3 billion pounds, down 0.2 percent from August 2011. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 58.2 pounds for August, down 0.3 pounds from August 2011. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.50 million head, 32,000 head more than August 2011, but 4,000 head less than July 2012.
