Johnson, Director September 1 Grain Stocks On September 1, 2012, Michigan corn stocks totaled 24.7 million bushels, 3 percent lower than a year earlier, according to Jay Johnson, Director of USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. About 53 percent of the corn was stored on farms. The fourth quarter disappearance was 63.6 million bushels, compared with 57.2 million bushels a year earlier. Soybean stocks on September 1, 2012, were 3.9 million bushels. That was 30 percent lower than stocks a year earlier. The fourth quarter indicated disappearance was 17.2 million bushels, compared with 11.2 million bushels during the same period in 2011. Farm stocks of soybeans were 0.9 million bushels. Wheat stocks on September 1, 2012, were 38.8 million bushels, 27 percent below a year ago. Approximately 93 percent of wheat stocks were in commercial storage. First quarter indicated disappearance was 27.1 million bushels, compared with 18.8 million bushels during the same period last year. U.S. corn stocks in all positions on September 1, 2012, totaled 988 million bushels, down 12 percent from September 1, 2011. Of the total stocks, 314 million bushels were stored on farms, down slightly percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, 675 million bushels, were down 17 percent from a year ago. The June-August 2012 indicated disappearance was 2.16 billion bushels, compared with 2.54 billion bushels during the same period last year. Soybeans stored in all positions on September 1, 2012, totaled 169 million bushels, down 21 percent from September 1, 2011. Soybean stocks stored on farms totaled 38.3 million bushels, down 21 percent from a year ago. Off- farm stocks, 131 million bushels, were down 21 percent from last September. Indicated disappearance for June-August 2012 totaled 498 million bushels, up 23 percent from the same period a year earlier. All wheat stored in all positions on September 1, 2012, totaled 2.10 billion bushels, down 2 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks were estimated at 573 million bushels, down 9 percent from last September. Off-farm stocks, 1.53 billion bushels, were up 1 percent from a year ago. The June-August 2012 indicated disappearance was 908 million bushels, up 27 percent from the same period a year earlier.
