Johnson, Director September Milk Production Dairy herds in Michigan produced 705 million pounds of milk during September, up 2.8 percent from a year ago, according to Jay Johnson, Director of the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 62.8 pounds, up 0.5 pounds from September 2011. The dairy herd was estimated at 374,000 head for September, up 7,000 from a year earlier. Milk production in the 23 major States during September totaled 14.7 billion pounds, down 0.5 percent from September 2011. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 57.7 pounds for September, down 0.4 pounds from September 2011. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.47 million head, 5,000 head more than September 2011, but 25,000 head less than August 2012.
