Johnson, Director Fruit Inventory Results for Strawberries, Brambles, and Cranberries Results from the 2011 Michigan Fruit Acreage Inventory have been compiled for strawberries, brambles, and cranberries. There were 165 commercial strawberry farms, 195 bramble farms, and 10 cranberry farms at the end of 2011, according to Jay Johnson, Director of the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Strawberries covered 750 acres at the conclusion of 2011, down 200 acres since 2006. Sixty percent of strawberry acres were on operations with fewer than 10 acres. Jewel, Honeoye, and Allstar were the most common varieties, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all land in strawberries. There were 500 acres of brambles at the end of 2011, unchanged from five years earlier. There were 105 acres of brambles planted from 2007 through 2011. Two-thirds of bramble acres were on operations with less than ten acres of brambles. Heritage, Nova, Jewel, and Canby varieties accounted for 40 percent of all land in brambles. There were 330 acres of cranberries on ten commercial farms. There were 85 acres planted from 2007 through 2011. Stevens and Pilgrim were the two top varieties, comprising 58 percent of total acres.
