Johnson, Director January Agricultural Prices Prices received by Michigan farmers for the full month of December 2012 and mid-month prices as of January 15, 2013 are listed in the table below. Some Michigan highlights were: January corn at $6.95 per bushel, is up $0.02 from December and up $0.98 from last year; January soybeans at $13.70 per bushel, is down $0.40 from last month but up $2.00 from last year; January milk at $20.30 per cwt, is down $1.20 from last month, but up $0.50 from last year. The U.S. preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in January, at 217 percent, based on 1990-1992=100, increased 18 points (9.0 percent) from December. The Crop Index is up 22 points (9.7 percent) and the Livestock Index increased 2 points (1.2 percent). Producers received higher prices for lettuce, broilers, cattle, and corn and lower prices for milk, soybeans, eggs, and wheat. In addition to prices, the overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased monthly movement of corn, soybeans, rice and strawberries offset the decreased marketing of broilers, milk, wheat, an upland cotton. The January Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) is 221 percent of the 1990-1992 average. The index is up 3 points (1.4 percent) from December and 11 points (5.2 percent) above January 2012. Higher prices in January for cash rent, nitrogen, other services, and taxes offset lower prices for diesel, interest, complete feeds, and mixed fertilizer.
