Johnson, Director January Milk Production Dairy herds in Michigan produced 763 million pounds of milk during January, up 3.1 percent from a year ago, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 65.3 pounds, up 1.1 pounds from 2012. The dairy herd was estimated at 377,000 head for January, up 5,000 from a year earlier. Milk production in the 23 major States during January totaled 15.9 billion pounds, up 0.6 percent from January 2012. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 60.4 pounds for January, up 0.4 pound from January 2012. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.50 million head, 2,000 less than in January 2012 but 6,000 head more than in December 2012.
