Kleweno, State Statistician Wine Grape Inventory 2002 There were 1,300 acres of wine grapes in Michigan at the end of 2002, unchanged from two years ago. The acreage was divided nearly evenly between the northwest Lower Peninsula and the southwest Lower Peninsula. Berrien, Grand Traverse, and Leelanau were the top three counties, accounting for nearly 80 percent of wine grape acres. There were 106 operations producing wine grapes commercially. Nearly two-thirds of those were small vineyards with less than 10 acres. Medium and large-sized vineyards, however, had nearly 80 percent of the acreage. Fifty-eight percent of wine acres were in vinifera varieties. That compares with 48 percent two years ago. There were almost no vinifera grown in the State until the early 1970's. Vinifera is a species of grape that includes many well-known varieties. These originated in Europe and are the varieties most recognized by wine consumers. There were 510 acres of hybrids in 2002, down from 570 acres in 2000. The top white wine grape varieties were White Riesling, Chardonnay, and Vidal Blanc. The top red varieties were Pinot Noir and Foch.
