mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 6, 2007 Issue MN-CW-18-07 Agricultural Summary Weekend rain and gusty winds interrupted widespread planting efforts of Minnesota producers, as progress nearly equaled the five-year average, according to USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Nearly 60 percent of Minnesota's spring wheat was planted during the past week. Mild weather earlier in the week allowed for an estimated 6.2 days suitable for field work. More than 40 percent of the corn and sugarbeet crop acreage was planted during the week, while soybean planting began this week with an estimated 14 percent seeded, only 1 percentage point behind the five-year average. The average temperature for the week was 56.9 degrees, 5.5 degrees above normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Friday were rated 2 percent very short, 18 short, 73 adequate, and 7 surplus. Field Crops Summary As of Sunday, May 6th, an estimated 70 percent of corn acreage was planted, compared to 55 percent last year and 69 percent for the average. Sugarbeet planting was 77 percent complete, compared to 79 percent for the average. Spring wheat acreage was 77 percent planted, compared to 62 percent average. Spring wheat was estimated at 12 emerged compared to 21 percent average. Oat acreage was 76 percent planted, with 24 percent emerged. Potatoes were 57 percent planted, compared to 58 percent average. Green Peas planted were 58 percent compared to 51 percent average.
