mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 5, 2007 Issue MN-CW-31-07 Agricultural Summary Eighty-four percent of the state's cropland was rated short or very short on topsoil moisture supplies, according to USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Pasture conditions dropped, with 78 percent rated as poor or very poor. Harvest of oats, wheat, and barley continued ahead of the average pace, pushed by hot and dry weather. Some producers were reported applying insecticide for soybean aphids in the southern portion of the state. The average temperature for the week was 72.0 degrees, 1.9 degrees above normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Friday were rated 53 percent very short, 31 short, 16 adequate, and 0 surplus. Field Crops Summary As of Sunday Aug 5th, 71 percent of corn acreage was in the milk stage compared to 45 percent for the five-year average. Corn in the dough stage was 18 percent compared to 7 percent for the average. Seventy- seven percent of soybeans were setting pods compared to 62 percent for the average. Twenty-nine percent of spring wheat acreage was harvested compared to 18 percent average. Seventy-six percent of oats were harvested compared to 47 percent average. As of Friday, Aug 3rd, 25 percent of field corn and 41 percent of soybeans were rated in Good or Excellent condition. Other crop ratings in good or excellent condition were: spring wheat, 69 percent, potatoes 87 percent, sunflowers 74 percent, sugarbeets 64 percent.
