mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 19, 2007 Issue MN-CW-33-07 Agricultural Summary Harvest of spring wheat and canola progressed rapidly in the northwest corner of the state despite midweek precipitation, according to USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Showers received through Friday, helped to improve topsoil moisture supplies, more notably in central and southern Minnesota. While pasture conditions improved slightly, corn and soybean conditions were relatively unchanged from the previous week. The average temperature for the week was 65.3 degrees, 2.8 degrees below normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Friday were rated 30 percent very short, 38 short, 30 adequate, and 2 surplus. Field Crops Summary As of Sunday Aug 19th, 73 percent of corn acreage was in the dough stage compared to 51 percent for the five-year average. Corn in the dent stage was 37 percent compared to 13 percent average. Corn cut for silage progressed rapidly, nearly two weeks ahead of the five-year average pace. Ninety-seven percent of soybeans were setting pods compared to 94 percent average. Six percent of soybeans were beginning to yellow. Eighty-one percent of spring wheat and 96 percent of oats were harvested. As of Friday, Aug 17th, 33 percent of field corn, and 43 percent of soybean were rated in good or excellent condition. Eighty-nine percent of potatoes, 66 percent of sunflowers, and 61 percent of sugarbeets were rated in good or excellent condition. Topsoil moisture supplies and crop conditions represented in this report are as of Friday, August 17th. Effects of severe weekend precipitation will be included in the August 27th report.
