mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending September 9, 2007 Issue MN-CW-36-07 Agricultural Summary Corn and soybeans matured rapidly aided by warm temperatures during the past week, according to USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Producers were busy harvesting corn for silage, potatoes, and dry beans, while sweet corn and canola harvests were both more than 80 percent completed. Topsoil moisture supplies continued mostly unchanged despite breezy conditions and scattered showers. There was an average of 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork. The average temperature for the week was 67.7 degrees, 6.1 degrees above normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Friday were rated 15 percent very short, 24 short, 55 adequate, and 6 surplus. Field Crops Summary As of Sunday, Sep 9th, 97 percent of corn had reached the dent stage, compared to 77 percent for the five-year average. Thirty-one percent of corn was mature, compared to 13 percent average. Eighty-five percent of soybeans were turning yellow, compared to 67 percent average. Forty-five percent of soybeans were dropping leaves compared to 25 percent average. As of Friday, Sep 7th, thirty-nine percent of field corn, and 54 percent of soybean were rated in good or excellent condition. Eighty-seven percent of potatoes, 70 percent of sunflowers, and 58 percent of sugarbeets were rated in good or excellent condition.
