mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending September 23, 2007 Issue MN-CW-38-07 Agricultural Summary Widespread rain during the past week boosted the statewide topsoil moisture supply rating to nearly 80 percent adequate or surplus for the first time since June, according to USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Although rains reduced the number of days suitable for fieldwork to an average of 4.6 for the week, producers were able to make some progress on the harvesting corn, soybean, dry edible bean and potatoes. Pasture and crop condition ratings were generally improved with the added moisture. The average temperature for the week was 62.2 degrees, 5.7 degrees above normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Friday were rated 5 percent very short, 16 short, 73 adequate, and 6 surplus. Field Crops Summary As of Sunday, Sept 23rd, 87 percent of corn was mature, compared to 54 percent average. Nine percent of corn was harvested for grain compared to 2 percent average, and corn cut for silage was 90 percent complete, compared to 72 percent average. Ninety-six percent of soybeans were dropping leaves compared to 77 percent average. Eighty-five percent of soybeans were mature compared to 44 percent average, and 13 percent were harvested compared to 9 percent average. As of Friday, Sept 21st, 43 percent of field corn, and 53 percent of soybean were rated in good or excellent condition. Eighty-six percent of potatoes, 63 percent of sunflowers, 69 percent of sugarbeets, and 34 percent of pasture were rated in good or excellent condition.
