mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending July 27, 2008 Issue MN-CW-30-08 Agricultural Summary Oat and barley harvests were underway as warm, dry weather promoted the ripening of small grain crops during the past week, according to USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Corn silking advanced 27 percentage points and soybeans setting pods advanced ten percentage points, also aided by the warm weather. The average temperature for the week was 69.7 degrees, 0.6 degrees below normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Friday, July 25th were 6 percent very short, 22 short, 70 adequate, and 2 surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Field Crops Summary As of Sunday, July 27th, the average corn height was estimated at 70 inches compared to 87 inches last year and 73 inches for the 5-year average. Thirty-four percent of corn was silking compared to 96 percent last year and 85 percent average. The average height of soybeans was 21 inches compared to 27 inches last year and 21 inches for the 5-year average. Seventy-one percent of soybeans were blooming compared to 86 percent last year and 86 percent average. Spring wheat was 44 percent ripening compared to 86 percent last year and 69 percent average. Barley was 53 percent ripening compared to 94 percent last year and 78 percent average. One percent of barley was harvested compared to 29 percent last year and 12 percent average. Oats were 59 percent ripening compared to 94 percent last year and 86 percent average. Four percent of oats were harvested compared to 45 percent last year and 25 percent average. As of Friday, July 25th, 73 percent of corn and 74 percent of soybeans were rated in good or excellent condition. Eighty-six percent of spring wheat, 75 percent of barley, and 75 percent of oats were rated in good or excellent condition.
