mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 17, 2008 Issue MN-CW-33-08 Agricultural Summary Minnesota's potato harvest is underway with 7 percent of the crop harvested as of Sunday, August 17th, according to USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Small grain harvest continued advancing behind the average pace while corn began to enter the dent stage of development during the past week. The average temperature for the week was 67.8 degrees, 0.7 degrees below normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Friday, August 15th were 13 percent very short, 28 short, 58 adequate, and 1 surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Field Crops Summary As of Sunday, August 17th, 74 percent of corn was in the milk stage compared to 98 percent last year and 89 percent average. Twenty percent of corn was in dough stage compared to 69 percent last year and 48 percent average. Soybeans were 89 percent setting pods compared to 95 percent last year and 93 percent average. Spring wheat was 15 percent harvested compared to 74 percent last year and 57 percent average. Barley was 39 percent harvested compared to 94 percent last year and 74 percent average. Oats were 57 percent harvested compared to 95 percent last year and 82 percent average. As of Friday, August 15th, 67 percent of corn and 68 percent of soybeans were rated in good or excellent condition. Eighty-one percent of spring wheat, 77 percent of barley, and 69 percent of oats were rated in good or excellent condition. Sixty-nine percent of dry beans, 78 percent of sunflowers, 75 percent of canola, and 41 percent of pasture were rated in good or excellent condition.
