mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 31, 2009 Issue MN-CW-22-09 Agricultural Summary The first corn condition ratings of the year indicated the crop in generally good condition statewide, according to the NASS Minnesota Field Office. Corn condition was reported as 2 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 66 percent good and 11 percent excellent. Dry conditions persisted throughout portions of central and southern Minnesota, while early week rains in the northwest halted fieldwork for a number of producers. Post-emergence herbicide application was underway; however, days were limited by strong winds in some areas. There were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 19 percent very short, 31 percent short, 42 percent adequate and 8 percent surplus across the state. Soybean planting advanced to 89 percent complete and 57 percent emerged, both ahead of last year and average. Spring wheat and barley emergence progressed significantly from last week; however, both remain behind last year and average. Sixty-four percent of spring wheat and 67 percent of barley has emerged. Emergence is behind due to earlier planting delays in major spring wheat and barley growing areas. Oats were 88 percent emerged and in primarily good to fair condition with 30 percent rated fair, 57 percent good and 8 percent excellent. Seventeen percent of first cutting alfalfa was complete. Alfalfa condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 53 percent good and 7 percent excellent. Pasture and range condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Cattlemen are delaying moving livestock to pasture in areas where grass is short.
