mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending June 14, 2009 Issue MN-CW-24-09 Agricultural Summary Crop conditions held steady following last weekend's rains, according to the NASS Minnesota Field Office. The percentage of small grains and row crops rated good to excellent was generally unchanged compared to last week despite rain falling across much of the state. Crop growth and development was slowed by a cool, damp start to the week; however, more seasonal weather returned by week's end. Producers generally reported a need for warmer weather. The number of growing degree days, since May 4th, was below normal for all reporting stations. There were 4.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Topsoil moisture supplies improved. Eight percent of topsoil was rated very short down from 20 percent last week. Sixty percent of topsoil was rated adequate for moisture statewide. Corn was 99 percent emerged with an average height of 9 inches. Soybeans were 90 percent emerged with an average height of 3 inches. Corn condition was rated 76 percent good to excellent compared to 75 percent last week, while soybeans were rated 69 percent good to excellent versus 70 percent a week ago. Nineteen percent of spring wheat and 14 percent of barley was jointing. Forty-one percent of oats was jointing with 3 percent headed. Alfalfa harvest advanced to 70 percent complete under warmer, drier weather at week's end. Pasture and range condition was rated 4 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 39 percent fair, 40 percent good, and 3 percent excellent.
