mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending June 21, 2009 Issue MN-CW-25-09 Agricultural Summary Topsoil moisture improved slightly, but some portions of the state remain short, according to the NASS Minnesota Field Office. Large areas of rain moved across much of Minnesota last week; however, amounts varied from several hundredths to in excess of two inches. Statewide, 21 percent of topsoil was rated short and 4 percent was rated very short of moisture. Warmer temperatures promoted crop growth and maturity, but also fueled severe weather in some areas. The first tornadoes of the season occurred Wednesday in Wilkin, Mower, Freeborn and Waseca counties. The showers and thunderstorms slowed corn and soybean spraying. Rain also delayed producers' completion of first cutting alfalfa harvest. Statewide, there were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Average corn height was 16 inches while average soybean height was 5 inches. Corn and soybean conditions improved slightly from last week. Corn condition was rated 78 percent good to excellent while soybeans were rated 73 percent good to excellent. Forty-eight percent of spring wheat and 47 percent of barley was jointing with 8 and 6 percent heading respectively. Seventy percent of oats was jointing with 17 percent headed. All three crops were rated in predominately fair to good condition. Conditions of minor field crops were rated for the first time last week. Canola was rated in primarily fair condition while green peas and dry beans were in generally good to excellent condition. Harvest of earlier planted green peas began late in the reporting period.
