mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending July 5, 2009 Issue MN-CW-27-09 Agricultural Summary Statewide, the growth of corn and soybeans was on pace with the five- year average, according to the NASS Minnesota Field Office. The average height of field corn was 42 inches, just behind the 5-year average of 43 inches. The average height of soybeans was 11 inches, compared to a 12 inch average. Clouds and below normal temperatures prevailed across much of the east Monday through Wednesday. Highs ranged from the mid-50s in the Arrowhead to the mid 70s across the southeast. Western Minnesota was relatively warmer with highs ranging from the mid 70s to low 80s. Warmer weather, particularly in the northeast, returned by week's end. Statewide, 6.10 days were suitable for fieldwork. Precipitation amounts were light. Topsoil moisture supplies declined with 69 percent rated adequate to surplus compared to 78 percent a week ago. Topsoil moisture remains short to very short across central Minnesota where precipitation amounts since April 1st range from 2 to over 5 inches below normal. Crops remain in generally good to excellent condition statewide. Corn was rated 82 percent good to excellent while soybeans were rated 74 percent good to excellent. Thirty percent of spring wheat was heading with 59 percent of the crop in good to excellent condition. Thirty-five percent of barley was heading with 56 percent rated good to excellent. Seventy percent of oats was heading with 63 percent in good to excellent condition. Some oats was baled for hay last week with 4 percent of the crop turning ripe. Sixty percent of alfalfa was rated good to excellent. Alfalfa weevil remains an issue in western Minnesota. Range and pastures were rated in mostly good to excellent condition. Livestock producers were turning bulls out last week.
