mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending July 12, 2009 Issue MN-CW-28-09 Agricultural Summary The percentage of spring wheat, barley and oats heading or beyond advanced last week with the crops rated primarily in good to excellent condition, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Spring wheat heading advanced 34 points to 64 percent heading while barley advanced 24 points to 59 percent heading. Sixty-two percent of spring wheat and 56 percent of barley was rated in good to excellent condition. Oats was 82 percent heading, with 65 percent of the crop in good to excellent condition. Producers were monitoring disease and insect pressure on the maturing small grains. Some incidence of aphids and tan spot in wheat were noted in the west central and northwest. Last week's high temperatures ranged from the low 70s north to mid 80s south. Showers and thunderstorms moved through southern parts of the state with rainfall amounts ranging from an inch to over 3 inches. Stronger storms produced pockets of damaging hail. Rainfall was negligible across the central. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 40 percent short to very short. Sixty percent of topsoil was adequate to surplus for moisture, down from 69 percent a week ago. Statewide 5.8 days were suitable for fieldwork. Corn and soybeans were in generally good to excellent condition statewide. Corn was rated 82 percent good to excellent with an average height of 55 inches, while soybeans were rated 74 percent good to excellent with an average height of 15 inches. Producers were monitoring soybean aphid levels, particularly in drier parts of the state. Range and pasture was rated 55 percent good to excellent with 15 percent rated poor to very poor.
