mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending July 19, 2009 Issue MN-CW-29-09 Agricultural Summary Topsoil moisture supplies held steady last week as rain fell across central and northern portions of the state, according to the USDA, NASS Minnesota Field Office. Precipitation totals from Tuesday's thunderstorms were varied with amounts ranging from under one-half to over 3 inches of rain. Sixty-one percent of topsoil was rated adequate to surplus for moisture, up from 60 percent last week. The week was cool as daytime highs were generally 5 to 10 degrees below normal in most locations. Statewide, there were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork. As of Sunday, 11 percent of corn was at or beyond the silking stage,5 percent ahead of last year, but 28 percent behind the 5-year average. Seventy-eight percent of the corn crop was rated in good to excellent condition, down 4 percent from last week. Thirty-nine percent of soybeans were blooming, 8 percent behind last year and 24 percent behind average. Soybeans were rated 71 percent good to excellent, down 3 percent from last week. Producers continue to monitor soybean aphid populations, which have been low thus far. Eighty-seven percent of the spring wheat crop was at or beyond the heading stage. Overall, 61 percent of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition. Wheat scab was present in some western counties, but plant numbers showing scab were low. Producers were applying fungicides where necessary. Barley was 85 percent heading with 56 percent rated in good to excellent condition. Oats heading was nearly complete at 93 percent. Forty-two percent of the crop was turning ripe with 2 percent harvested for grain.
