mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending July 26, 2009 Issue MN-CW-30-09 Agricultural Summary Wheat and barley development continued to advance; however, both crops remain behind last year and average, according to the USDA, NASS Minnesota Field Office. As of Sunday, 24 percent of spring wheat was turning ripe, a 10 percent increase over last week, while barley advanced 9 percent to 26 percent turning ripe. Sixty-one percent of oats was turning ripe and 5 percent was harvested. Winter wheat harvest began in portions of the state last week. The week's weather was active producing showers and thunderstorms throughout the state. Hail and heavy rains were associated with stronger storms. However, precipitation amounts were quite variable and topsoil moisture supplies declined. Statewide, topsoil moisture was rated 57 percent adequate to surplus down from 61 percent last week. Forty-five percent of corn was at or beyond the silking stage, 15 percent ahead of last year, but 27 percent behind the 5-year average. Seventy-five percent of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition, a 3 percent decline from last week. Sixty-three percent of soybeans were blooming with 12 percent setting pods. Sixty-nine percent of soybeans were rated good to excellent, down slightly from 71 percent a week ago. Other field crop conditions ranged from fair to excellent. Sixty-eight percent of sugarbeets and 67 percent of dry beans were rated good to excellent. Sunflowers and canola were rated 80 and 95 percent fair to good respectively. Green pea harvest was nearly complete in some locations while sweet corn harvest was just beginning at 1 percent harvested.
