mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 2, 2009 Issue MN-CW-31-09 Agricultural Summary Crop development continued behind the 5-year average pace as average temperatures ranged from 3 to 9 degrees below normal statewide, according to the USDA, NASS Minnesota Field Office. July 2009 was the third coolest July in state history according to the Minnesota Climatology Office. The absence of extreme heat was positive for maturing crops, particularly in drier areas; however, producers noted the need for adequate growing degree days for crop development. Eighty percent of corn was at or beyond the silking stage, 5 percentage points ahead of last year, but 10 points behind the 5-year average. Thirty- three percent of this year's soybean crop was setting pods, compared to 31 percent a year ago and 51 percent average. Precipitation totals were less than one inch at most reporting stations. Statewide, 54 percent of topsoil was rated adequate for moisture, down slightly from last week's 56 percent. Harvest of spring wheat and barley was underway, each 2 percent harvested. Oats were13 percent harvested, 4 points behind last year and 27 points behind average. Corn and soybean conditions were relatively unchanged. Corn was rated 74 percent good to excellent compared to 75 percent last week. Soybeans were rated 67 percent good to excellent down 2 points from last week. Producers were spraying for soybean aphid in some areas. Spider mites were reported in drier parts of the state.
