mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 9, 2009 Issue MN-CW-32-09 Agricultural Summary Ninety-four percent of Minnesota's corn acres were silking or beyond, moving 14 percentage-points during the week, according to the USDA, NASS Minnesota Field Office. Corn silking is occurring at the same pace as last year's crop, but 3 points behind the average. Twenty-three percent of the corn crop had reached the milk stage by week's end, 9 points behind last year and 36 points behind the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated 74 percent good to excellent, unchanged from last week. Thunderstorms produced strong winds and heavy rain late Friday across the central and east. Showers and thunderstorms redeveloped Saturday afternoon over western Minnesota as heat and humidity returned to the area. Some storms were again severe with hail being reported in and around the Marshall area. Statewide, 62 percent of topsoil was rated adequate to surplus for moisture, up from last week's 54 percent. Fifty percent of soybeans were setting pods, 8 points behind last year's pace and 23 points behind the five-year average. Soybean condition was rated 65 percent good to excellent. Sixty-one percent of the spring wheat crop was turning ripe, with 3 percent harvested. Spring wheat condition improved 3 points from last week to 71 percent good to excellent. Eighty-five percent of oats were turning ripe with 30 percent harvested. Sweet corn harvest advanced 6 points to 10 percent harvested. Potatoes were rated in primarily good condition with 5 percent harvested.
