mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 16, 2009 Issue MN-CW-33-09 Agricultural Summary Spring wheat harvest remained behind last year and average due, in part, to springtime planting delays and the below normal average temperatures that followed, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. By Sunday, 9 percent of spring wheat was harvested, 5 points behind last year and 36 points behind average. Overall, 70 percent of the spring wheat crop was rated in good to excellent condition. Barley was 16 percent harvested and 50 percent of this year's oat crop was harvested. Temperatures were seasonably warm with daytime highs generally ranging from the low 80s north to low 90s south. Showers and thunderstorms affected the state Thursday through Sunday. Areas of the northwest and central received between 1 and 2 inches of rain with some locally heavier amounts. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 63 percent adequate to surplus, up from 62 percent last week. Fifty-five percent of the corn crop was at or beyond the milk stage, 13 points behind last year and 28 points behind the 5-year average. Nine percent was at or beyond the dough stage, 9 points behind last year and 33 points behind average. Statewide, 74 percent of the corn crop was rated in good to excellent condition, unchanged from a week ago. By Sunday, pod set was evident in 72 percent of the soybean crop, 13 points behind last year and 18 points behind average. Sixty-seven percent of soybeans were in good to excellent condition. Potatoes were 11 percent harvested by week's end, 5 points ahead of last year, but 3 points behind average. Ninety percent of the potato crop was rated in good to excellent condition. Sweet corn harvest advanced to 16 percent complete, 4 points behind last year and 16 points behind average.
