mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending April 25, 2010 Issue MN-CW-16-10 Agricultural Summary More warm, dry weather prevailed in Minnesota this past week, creating nearly ideal fieldwork conditions, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of Sunday, April 25, temperatures statewide were more than 5 degrees above normal, and 6.2 days were rated suitable for fieldwork during the week. As a result, corn planting and other spring fieldwork quickly advanced, and soybean planting was underway despite weekend showers. Corn planting advanced 50 percentage points to 63 percent, 29 points above last year and 47 points above the five-year average. Soybean planting began with 4 percent planted, compared to 2 percent last year and 1 percent average. Spring quickly advanced, and soybean planting was underway despite weekend showers. Corn planting advanced 50 percentage points to 63 percent, 29 points above last year and 47 points above the five-year average. Soybean planting began with 4 percent planted, compared to 2 percent last year and 1 percent average. Spring wheat planting was nearing completion with 87 percent planted and 26 percent emerged. Sugarbeet planting leapt to 87 percent planted, 72 points ahead of last week and 69 points ahead of average. Moderate rains over the weekend covered mostly central and southern areas of the state. The southwest region received an average of a half inch of precipitation, while areas in the north received a tenth of an inch, not enough precipitation to lift no-burn bans and eliminate abnormally dry conditions. The amount of topsoil moisture supply rated very short to short increased to 33 percent compared to 21 percent last week. The weekend rains were a welcome relief; however, producers could still use more rain to promote germination and growth of emerging crops. Average precipitation levels for the week were a quarter inch below normal. Pasture conditions were rated 60 percent good to excellent.
