mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 2, 2010 Issue MN-CW-17-10 Agricultural Summary Spring wheat planting neared completion this past week, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of Sunday, May 2, temperatures statewide were 2.2 degrees above normal, and 4.7 days were rated suitable for fieldwork during the week. Dry, mild weather early in the week kept producers in the fields to continue planting at an above average pace. Showers delivered moderate precipitation statewide Thursday night into Friday, and scattered showers continued throughout the weekend. Precipitation amounts varied, with the north central region receiving one inch and the south central region receiving a quarter inch, on average. April 2010 was the second warmest dating back to 1891, and overall, producers reported being pleased with spring planting progression. Spring wheat planting progressed to 98 percent complete, compared to 16 percent planted last year and 34 percent for the five-year average. Sixty- seven percent of the crop has emerged, and 94 percent was rated in good to excellent condition. Corn planting advanced to 87 percent, 31 percentage points ahead of last year and 46 points ahead of average. Soybean planting was 19 percent complete, compared to 6 percent last year and 4 percent average. Sugarbeet planting neared completion with 97 percent planted, 53 points ahead of average. Oats were 60 percent emerged with 83 percent of the crop rated in good to excellent condition. Late week rains helped to restore needed topsoil moisture supplies, with 24 percent rated very short to short, compared to 33 percent last week. Pasture conditions were rated 61 percent good to excellent.
