mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 9, 2010 Issue MN-CW-18-10 Agricultural Summary Scattered rains throughout the week ending May 9 slowed fieldwork, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Temperatures cooled after warmer than average conditions over much of the last two months and fell, in some areas, below freezing over the weekend. The average temperature was 45.9 degrees, 6.5 degrees below normal. Statewide 3.7 days were rated suitable for fieldwork, compared to 4.7 days in the previous reporting period. Corn planting was nearly complete at 94 percent, compared to 87 percent last week and 64 percent for the five-year average. Thirty-two percent of corn was emerged. Soybean planting advanced to 40 percent, 15 percentage points ahead of last year and 23 points ahead of average. Spring wheat was 87 percent emerged, 77 points ahead of last year and 68 points ahead of average. Oats and barley continued ahead of their averages and were 81 and 85 percent emerged, respectively. Rainfall amounts were highest in the northwest portion of the state where precipitation averaged over an inch. The southwest received the lowest average precipitation level of .37 inches.
