mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 16, 2010 Issue MN-CW-19-10 Agricultural Summary Steady rains and cool weather early in the week slowed planting but restored needed soil moisture supplies to emerging crops, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of May 16, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 94 percent adequate to surplus compared to 84 percent in the previous reporting period. Precipitation averaged a half-inch above normal statewide. Above average temperatures returned on Friday and continued through the weekend allowing fields to dry and some field work to resume; however producers reported that crops need more warm temperatures to recover from the nearly two-week spell of wet, cool weather. Only 1.4 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Soybeans advanced to 47 percent planted, compared to 49 percent last year and 38 percent for the five-year average. Corn emergence was at 52 percent, 16 percentage points ahead of last year and 24 points ahead of average. Ninety-five percent of spring wheat and 93 percent of barley was emerged with both crops at 4 percent jointing. Oats were 94 percent emerged with 7 percent jointing. Crop conditions for all three small grains were primarily rated good to excellent. Canola and green pea planting was at 92 and 89 percent complete respectively, both ahead of last year and average. Sweet corn was 38 percent planted, two points ahead of last year and 9 points ahead of average. Sugarbeet condition was virtually unchanged from the previous reporting period with 79 percent rated in good to excellent condition. Pasture and range condition was rated 4 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 59 percent good, and 12 percent excellent.
