mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 23, 2010 Issue MN-CW-20-10 Agricultural Summary Warm weather throughout the week allowed soybean producers to make significant planting progress, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of May 23, soybean planting advanced 34 percentage points to 81 percent complete, compared to 72 percent last year and 64 percent for the five-year average. Other crops nearing planting completion included canola, potatoes, and green peas. All three crops were 93 percent planted or greater. Temperatures reached the highest levels so far this year, and highs were approximately 5 degrees above normal during the reporting period. Scattered precipitation affected the central and southern areas of the state but produced no significant accumulation. Statewide, 5.5 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 94 percent adequate to surplus, unchanged from the previous reporting period. Corn was 78 percent emerged, 11 points ahead of last year and 21 points ahead of average, with 87 percent of the crop rated in good to excellent condition. Spring wheat and barley jointing advanced to 14 and 10 percent respectively. Both crops were rated 93 percent in good to excellent condition. Alfalfa first cutting was 22 percent complete, 19 points ahead of last year and average. Alfalfa condition was rated 2 percent poor, 11 percent fair, 68 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. Pasture and range condition was rated 3 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 63 percent good, and 14 percent excellent.
