mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 30, 2010 Issue MN-CW-21-10 Agricultural Summary Warm temperatures and adequate moisture produced good growing conditions for crops, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of Sunday, May 30, 90 percent or greater of small grains and row crops were rated in good to excellent condition. Producers continued to plant remaining crops and began herbicide application. Statewide, 5.5 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Temperatures statewide were 9 degrees above normal for the week, and Monday set daytime high records with temperatures in the 90's. Precipitation for most of the state was below normal, though northern areas received over 3 inches in localized areas. Reports of strong winds and hail in some areas contributed to slowed fieldwork in much of the northwest. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 8 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Corn was 94 percent emerged with an average height of 5 inches. Soybeans planted advanced to 95 percent and 60 percent of the crop had emerged with an average height of 2 inches. Both crops were rated 92 percent in good to excellent condition. Twenty-five percent of spring wheat and 26 percent of barley was jointing. Fifty-two percent of oats were jointing and 3 percent were heading. All three small grains were rated 90 percent or greater in good to excellent condition. Potato planting neared completion with 97 percent planted. Sunflowers were 86 percent planted, 38 percentage points ahead of last year and 16 points ahead of average. Sweet corn was 62 percent planted, 3 points behind last year and 5 points ahead of average. The first cutting of alfalfa advanced to 48 percent complete, 33 points ahead of last year and average. Alfalfa condition was rated 1 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 65 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. Pasture and range condition was rated 3 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 65 percent good, and 12 percent excellent.
