mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending June 13, 2010 Issue MN-CW-23-10 Agricultural Summary Heavy rains and cool temperatures prevailed throughout the state, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of June 13, precipitation was .80 inch above normal statewide. Severe thunderstorms on June 10-11 produced some of the largest precipitation levels of the year, saturating soils and causing standing water in some low areas. Statewide 2.5 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 98 percent adequate to surplus compared to 87 percent in the previous reporting period. Despite wet conditions the first half of the month, crop condition ratings remained above 90 percent good to excellent for most crops. Corn was rated 94 percent good to excellent, up from 92 percent in the previous reporting period, with an average height of 13 inches. Soybeans were rated 92 percent good to excellent, compared to 93 percent in the previous reporting period, with an average height of 4 inches. Crop progress for small grains remained ahead of average. Spring wheat and barley were both 80 percent jointing and 20 and 23 percent heading, respectively. Oats were 87 percent jointing and 36 percent heading. Spring wheat and oats were both rated 91 percent good to excellent, and barley was rated 90 percent good to excellent. Sweet corn was 83 percent planted compared to 85 percent last year and 80 percent for the five-year average. Dry beans were 93 percent planted, 5 percentage points behind last year and 1 point behind average. Canola was rated 77 percent in fair to good condition. Seventy-five percent of the first cutting of alfalfa was complete, and 87 percent of alfalfa was rated in good to excellent condition compared to 89 percent during the previous reporting period. Pasture condition was rated 1 percent poor, 17 percent fair, 59 percent good, and 23 percent excellent.
