mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending June 27, 2010 Issue MN-CW-25-10 Agricultural Summary Another round of severe weather has impacted Minnesota agriculture this past week, including heavy downpours, strong winds, localized hail, and reports of tornadoes across the north, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of June 27, rainfall added to already wet soil conditions across the state. Calmer conditions and sunshine returned on Sunday; however, a few reports stated that crops were drowning out in some lower areas. Wet conditions were making spraying and haying activities difficult. Statewide average precipitation was 2.12 inches, 1 inch above normal. Thirty-five percent of topsoil moisture supplies were rated surplus compared to 28 percent during the previous week. Statewide, 3 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Crops remained generally in good to excellent condition statewide. Average corn height was 32 inches and was rated 90 percent in good to excellent condition. Average soybean height was 9 inches and was rated 83 percent in good to excellent condition. Seven percent of soybeans were blooming compared to 3 percent for the five-year average. Seventy-three percent of spring wheat was heading with 85 percent rated good to excellent. Eighty-one percent of oats were heading and 5 percent were ripening with 86 percent rated good to excellent. Barley was 80 percent heading with 78 percent rated good to excellent. Sweet corn planting was 95 percent complete. Alfalfa first cutting was 84 percent complete with 77 percent rated in good to excellent condition. Alfalfa weevils remained an issue in northern and western areas. Range and pasture condition was rated 1 percent poor, 11 percent fair, 64 percent good, and 24 percent excellent.
