mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending July 11, 2010 Issue MN-CW-27-10 Agricultural Summary Above average temperatures have been beneficial for crops and helped to dry damp fields, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of July 11th, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 23 percent surplus, down from 32 percent last week. Drier conditions were beneficial for haying and spraying in some areas. Statewide 4.9 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Precipitation varied statewide; amounts were light across the north but east central and south central regions received an average of 2 inches. Heavy rains fell Wednesday, while hot, humid conditions gave way to scattered rain and thunderstorms by week's end. Crop conditions were generally unchanged from last week. A few respondents noted that the continued heavy rains have caused yellow and uneven crop growth in isolated areas. Corn was rated in 57 percent good and 31 percent excellent condition, while soybeans were rated in 62 percent good and 21 percent excellent condition. Corn silking was 14 percent complete, on pace with the five-year average. Corn average height was 61 inches. Thirty-five percent of soybeans were blooming while 2 percent were setting pods, both on pace with the average. Soybean height was 17 inches. Small grain development continued ahead of average with heading virtually completed. Spring wheat was 31 percent ripening, 27 percentage points ahead of last year and 16 points ahead of average. Barley was 43 percent ripening, 39 points ahead of last year and 25 points ahead of average. Barley was 1 percent harvested. Forty-four percent of oats were ripening,26 points ahead of last year and 13 points ahead of average. Two percent of oats were harvested. Alfalfa first cutting was 96 percent complete. Range and pasture condition was rated 2 percent poor, 12 percent fair, 64 percent good, and 22 percent excellent.
