mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending July 18, 2010 Issue MN-CW-28-10 Agricultural Summary Crops continued developing ahead of average despite a stormy week ending on July 18, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. On Wednesday, powerful thunderstorms moved across southern and central Minnesota with reports of localized hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornados. The heaviest rains were reported mostly in northern and eastern sections of the state. More storms struck Saturday evening as hot, humid air gave way to severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds, localized hail and reports of tornados across the northern metro region. Statewide 5.2 days were rated suitable for fieldwork, the highest average since May 30. Weekly temperatures were nearly one degree above normal statewide. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 15 percent surplus, down from 23 percent last week. Some reports noted that moisture is needed in some areas of the state. Small grains ripening advanced at a rapid pace. Spring wheat was 67 percent ripening, compared with 13 percent last year and 34 percent for the five-year average. Barley was 69 percent ripening, 54 percentage points ahead of last year and 28 points ahead of average. Oats were 80 percent ripening compared to 39 percent last year and 57 percent average. Two percent of barley and 6 percent of oats were harvested, respectively. Corn silking jumped 45 points from last week to 59 percent, 25 points ahead of average. Average corn height was 73 inches. Sixty-three percent of soybeans were blooming while 7 percent were setting pods. Soybean height was 22 inches. Producers continue to scout for soybean aphids. Crop conditions generally improved from last week. Corn was rated in 55 percent good and 35 percent excellent condition, while soybeans were rated in 59 percent good and 25 percent excellent condition. Spring wheat was rated in 56 percent good and 32 percent excellent condition.
