mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending July 25, 2010 Issue MN-CW-29-10 Agricultural Summary Small grain harvest was underway as warm weather promoted the ripening of small grain crops during the past week, according to USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of July 25, spring wheat was one percent harvested, compared with 0 percent last year and 2 percent for the five- year average. Barley was 6 percent harvested, 6 percentage points ahead of last year but 2 points behind average. Oats harvested was 17 percent, 12 points ahead of last year and on pace with average. Other harvesting activity included potatoes and sweet corn with 1 and 8 percent harvested, respectively. Statewide average precipitation was over one half-inch above normal. Heavy rains on Thursday fell across the south, exceeding 3 inches in some areas. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 16 percent surplus, up from 15 percent last week. Statewide 5 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Some producers in the central region reported isolated hail damage from recent storms. Producers continued to monitor soybean aphid populations. Eighty-five percent of corn was at or beyond the silking stage, 45 points above last year and 18 points ahead of average. Eighty percent of soybeans were blooming and 25 percent were setting pods, 14 points ahead of last year and 1 point ahead of average. Crop conditions held steady as adequate heat and soil moisture were beneficial for crop growth and maturity. Corn was rated in 53 percent good and 36 percent excellent condition, while soybeans were rated in 58 percent good and 27 percent excellent condition. Other field crop conditions generally ranged from good to excellent; however, canola was rated 26 percent fair and 41 percent good. Pasture and range condition was rated 1 percent poor, 10 percent fair, 66 percent good, and 23 percent excellent.
