mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 1, 2010 Issue MN-CW-30-10 Agricultural Summary Small grains continued to ripen well ahead of the average pace, but frequent precipitation and wet field conditions slowed harvest progress, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of August 1, the statewide average temperature was 71.3 degrees, about 1 degree above normal. However, heavy rains fell in the north and every reporting station across the state recorded some precipitation during the week. This kept fields wet and limited fieldwork in the north and central parts of the state. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 80 percent adequate and 17 percent surplus, up slightly from the previous week. Development of corn and soybeans continued at the average pace and condition ratings were mostly good or excellent. However, some reporters noted that consistent surplus moisture caused drowned out areas in some corn and soybean fields. Statewide, there were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Spring wheat harvest progressed to 9 percent complete, compared to 2 percent last year and 10 percent for the five-year average. Oats were 34 percent harvested, 22 percentage points ahead of last year and 2 points behind average. Barley was 15 percent harvested, 13 points ahead of last year but 7 points behind average. The canola harvest was underway with 1 percent harvested, compared to 2 percent average. Sweet corn and potatoes were 11 and 6 percent harvested, respectively. Corn development was on pace with average, with 30 percent in the milk stage and 3 percent in the dough stage. Soybeans were 48 percent setting pods, 18 points ahead of last year and on pace with average. Crop conditions generally improved from last week: 50 percent of corn was rated good and 40 percent was rated excellent, while 56 percent of soybeans were rated good and 31 percent were rated excellent. Range and pasture was rated 2 percent poor, 11 percent fair, 63 percent good, and 24 percent excellent. Wet conditions have made haying difficult in some areas.
