mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 8, 2010 Issue MN-CW-31-10 Agricultural Summary Small grain harvest advanced at a rapid pace during the last week, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of August 8, above average temperatures and drier conditions prevailed in the northwestern part of the state, allowing farmers to make rapid progress on the small grain harvest. Spring wheat was 47 percent harvested, compared to 3 percent last year and 25 percent for the five-year average. Barley was 46 percent harvested, compared to 6 percent last year and 44 percent for the average. Sixty-seven percent of oats were harvested, compared to 28 percent last year and 56 percent for the average. Average temperatures were 2.6 degrees above normal statewide. Precipitation amounts varied throughout the state, ranging from a trace in the northwest region to over 3 inches in the west central and central regions. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 93 percent adequate to surplus, compared to 97 percent last week. Statewide 5.5 days were rated suitable for fieldwork, the highest number since May 30. Corn was 71 percent in the milk stage, compared to 21 percent last year and 54 percent average. Dough stage advanced to 21 percent, compared to 1 percent last year and 15 percent average. One percent of corn was in the dent phase, compared to 0 percent last year and 2 percent average. Corn was rated in 51 percent good and 40 percent excellent condition. Soybeans were 97 percent blooming, compared to 87 percent last year and 95 percent average. Seventy-eight percent were setting pods, compared to 48 percent during the previous year and 70 percent average. Soybean condition was rated 56 percent good and 30 percent excellent. Some producers reported spraying soybeans for aphids in some areas. Other crops harvested included potatoes, sweet corn, and canola at 12, 21,and 7 percent, respectively. Potatoes were rated in 58 percent good and 38 percent excellent condition, and canola was rated in 27 percent fair and 38 percent good condition.
