mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 15, 2010 Issue MN-CW-32-10 Agricultural Summary Last week's rains slowed small grain harvest; however, progress remained ahead of last year and the five-year average, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Spring wheat producers harvested 28 percent of the state's crop during the week compared to 38 percent harvested during the previous reporting period. Barley and oats harvest were also slowed as 3.9 days were rated suitable for fieldwork, statewide, down from 5.5 days a week ago. Overall, spring wheat harvest was 75 percent complete, 67 percentage points ahead of last year and 33 points ahead of the five-year average. Barley harvest was 71 percent complete, 56 points ahead of last year and 10 points ahead of average. Oats harvested was 82 percent complete, compared to 47 percent last year and 74 percent average. Other ongoing harvests included: sweet corn at 32 percent complete, potatoes at 16 percent complete and canola at 21 percent complete. Hot, humid conditions prevailed over much of central and southern Minnesota for much of last week. The warm, wet air triggered thunderstorms across the state with rainfall totals for the week exceeding 3 inches in some locations. Cooler, drier conditions developed across most of the state Saturday. By Sunday, daytime highs were generally in the low to mid 70s statewide. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 81 adequate and 17 percent surplus. Twenty-one percent of this year's corn crop reached the milk stage during the week pushing overall progress to 92 percent, 42 points ahead of last year and 13 points ahead of average. Fifty-four percent of corn was in the dough stage and 7 percent was denting, both ahead of last year's pace. Statewide, 49 percent of corn was reported in good condition and 41percent was in excellent condition. Pod setting was evident in 92 percent of this year's soybean crop, 23 points ahead of last year and 4 points ahead of average. Statewide, 54 percent of the soybean crop was reported in good condition and 34 percent was in excellent condition. Producers continue to monitor soybean aphid populations.
