mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 22, 2010 Issue MN-CW-33-10 Agricultural Summary Normal temperatures and below average precipitation allowed producers to make steady harvest progress, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of August 22, spring wheat was 89 percent harvested, compared to 14 percent last year and 57 percent for the five-year average. Barley was 95 percent harvested, compared to 22 percent last year and 75 percent average. Oat harvest was 95 percent complete, compared to 55 percent last year and 83 percent average. Some reporters in northwestern areas noted that frequent showers have slowed harvest progress. Temperatures were at their seasonal average this week across the state, a drop from above average temperatures that prevailed throughout August. Statewide precipitation was below normal for the week; however, rainfall varied throughout the state. Areas in the north central, northeast, and east central received over an inch of rainfall, while areas across the south received less than a quarter-inch. Corn progress remained ahead of average. Ninety-seven percent of Minnesota's corn crop reached the milk stage, compared to 77 percent last year and 92 percent average. Eighty-one percent of corn was in the dough stage, compared to 21 percent last year and 59 percent average. Corn was 35 percent denting, compared to 1 percent last year and 25 percent average. Soybeans were 96 percent setting pods, compared to 88 percent last year and 96 percent average, while 3 percent were turning yellow, compared to 0 percent last year and 6 percent average. Crop conditions were generally unchanged from last week. Statewide 52 percent of corn was reported in good condition and 38 percent was in excellent condition. Soybeans were rated 55 percent in good condition and 33 percent in excellent condition. Other harvest activity included sweet corn at 46 percent, potatoes at 23 percent, and canola at 69 percent complete. The corn silage harvest began with 3 percent harvested, compared to 1 percent last year and 6 percent average.
