mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 29, 2010 Issue MN-CW-34-10 Agricultural Summary As of August 29, 14 percent of soybeans were turning yellow, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. The percentage of soybeans turning yellow was 12 percentage points ahead of last year but 5 points behind the five-year average. Soybeans were rated in 57 percent good condition and 32 percent excellent condition, generally unchanged from a week ago. Average temperatures were 3.5 degrees above normal, despite a cold front that moved through the state early Tuesday morning and brought cooler, drier air. Overnight lows dropped into the 40s and 50s by mid-week. Dry conditions allowed 6.2 days to be rated suitable for fieldwork statewide, the highest number since the week of April 25. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 85 percent adequate and 9 percent surplus, compared to 80 percent adequate and 17 percent surplus last week. The small grain harvest was virtually complete with spring wheat at 97 percent and oats and barley at 99 percent complete. All three crops were ahead of their averages. The canola harvest was 94 percent complete, compared to 6 percent last year and 55 percent average. Sweet corn was 64 percent harvested, compared to 38 percent last year and 56 percent average. Twenty-eight percent of potatoes were harvested, compared to 15 percent last year and 25 percent average. Corn progress continued ahead of average. Ninety-five percent of corn was in the dough stage, compared to 48 percent last year and 79 percent average. Corn in the dent stage jumped 33 points this week to 68 percent, compared to 6 percent last year and 48 percent average. Two percent of corn reached the mature stage, compared to 0 percent last year and 3 percent average. Corn harvested for silage was 12 percent complete, compared to 4 percent last year and 13 percent average. Corn was rated in 51 percent good and 40 percent excellent condition, a slight increase from last week.
