mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending September 5, 2010 Issue MN-CW-35-10 Agricultural Summary Cooler, wet weather prevailed this past week along with substantial winds at times, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of September 5, average temperatures dropped closer to normal levels compared with August, when average temperatures were 2 to 7 degrees warmer than normal. The statewide average temperature was 64.2 degrees, 1.3 degrees above normal. Average precipitation ranged from 0.28 inch below normal in the Northeast District to 1.75 inches above normal in the West Central District. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies were rated 74 percent adequate and 23 percent surplus, compared with 85 percent adequate and 9 percent surplus last week. Surplus topsoil moisture levels returned to levels last seen in July. Statewide 4.4 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Corn development remained ahead of average pace. Eighty-five percent of corn was in the dent stage, compared to 27 percent last year and 67 percent for the five-year average. Corn in the mature stage was 12 percent, compared to 0 percent last year and 8 percent average. Corn silage was 35 percent harvested, compared to 8 percent last year and 25 percent average. Corn was rated in 53 percent good and 38 percent excellent condition, nearly equal to last week. Soybean development was on pace with average. Forty-six percent of soybeans were turning yellow, compared to 27 percent last year and 47 percent average. Twelve percent of soybeans were dropping their leaves, compared to 1 percent last year and 12 percent average. Soybeans were two percent mature, compared to 0 percent last year and 1 percent average. Soybeans were rated in 57 percent good and 32 percent excellent condition, unchanged from last week. Potatoes were 31 percent harvested, sweet corn was 73 percent harvested, dry beans were 14 percent harvested, and sugarbeets were 7 percent harvested. The canola harvest was virtually complete at 97 percent.
