mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending September 12, 2010 Issue MN-CW-36-10 Agricultural Summary Cool, wet weather continued this week, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of September 12, rainfall was above normal for most Minnesota observers, except for a few southeastern counties. Precipitation amounts were heaviest in the northwestern part of the state, where rainfall was 2.3 inches above normal. Amounts were also heavy in west central and north central regions, receiving 1.6 and 1.4 inches of rain above normal, respectively. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies were rated 66 percent adequate and 33 percent surplus. Surplus topsoil moisture level is the second highest for the year, leaving producers hoping for hot and dry weather for the upcoming harvest. Statewide 3.3 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Temperatures dropped to below-normal levels. The statewide average temperature for the week was 3.2 degrees below normal. Ninety-four percent of corn was in the dent stage, compared to 52 percent last year and 83 percent for the five-year average. Corn in the mature stage was 28 percent, compared to 1 percent last year and 20 percent average. Corn silage was 64 percent harvested, compared to 19 percent last year and 45 percent average. Corn was rated in 53 percent good and 37 percent excellent condition, nearly equal to last week. Seventy-nine percent of soybeans were turning yellow, compared to 59 percent last year and 74 percent average. Thirty-seven percent of soybeans were shedding their leaves, compared to 14 percent last year and 33 percent average. Soybeans were 6 percent mature, compared to 0 percent last year and 8 percent average. Soybeans were rated in 57 percent good and 31 percent excellent condition, nearly equal to last week. Potatoes were 34 percent harvested, sweet corn was 83 percent harvested, dry beans were 27 percent harvested, and sugarbeets were 9 percent harvested.
