mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending September 26, 2010 Issue MN-CW-38-10 Agricultural Summary A major storm event on Wednesday and Thursday brought heavy rainfall to southern areas of the state, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of September 26, an average of 7.2 inches of rain was received in the South Central region, followed by 5.1 inches in the Southwest and 4.4 inches in the Southeast. This significant rainfall caused widespread flooding and road closures. Hail was also reported in several southern locations. While the heaviest rain fell in the south, most areas of the state received above-normal precipitation. Amounts were heavy in the Northwest and East Central regions, receiving 2.2 and 2.1 inches of rain, respectively. Statewide 2.3 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 28 percent adequate and 72 percent surplus. The row crop harvest was suspended by heavy rain and saturated soils. Corn harvest advanced only 1 percentage point from last week to 2 percent harvested, compared to 0 percent last year and 3 percent for the five- year average. Corn silage harvest advanced to 92 percent, compared to 59 percent last year and 80 percent average. Soybeans were 6 percent harvested, compared to 4 percent last year and 13 percent average. The sweet corn harvest was virtually complete at 96 percent. Potatoes were 62 percent harvested, dry beans were 65 percent harvested, sugarbeets were 16 percent harvested, and sunflowers were 12 percent harvested. Corn in the mature stage was 79 percent, compared to 15 percent last year and 56 percent average. Corn was rated in 53 percent good and 32 percent excellent condition, a drop from the previous week. Ninety percent of soybeans were shedding their leaves, compared to 76 percent last year and 86 percent average. Soybeans were 63 percent mature, compared to 32 percent last year and 55 percent average. Soybeans were rated in 53 percent good and 28 percent excellent condition, a drop from the previous week.
