mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending April 24, 2011 Issue MN-CW-16-11 Agricultural Summary This past week provided no relief from continuing cold and wet conditions, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Statewide average temperatures were 7.1 degrees below normal. A large storm on April 19-20 passed across southeastern Minnesota and dropped record-setting snowfall in some areas, including 3.8 inches in Rochester and 5.1 inches in La Crescent. Snow melted quickly as afternoon temperatures reached the 40s. North of this storm system, cold temperatures prevailed with readings in the teens. Conditions have contributed to saturated fields and low soil temperatures. The anticipated start date for full scale fieldwork was pushed back to May 1. Less than one day was rated suitable for fieldwork. Other agricultural activity included preparing implements for fieldwork, tiling, and calving. As of April 24, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 55 percent adequate and 45 percent surplus, compared to 51 percent adequate and 49 percent surplus during the previous week. Oats planted held steady at 4 percent, compared to 82 percent last year and 39 percent for the five-year average. Barley was 1 percent planted, compared to 82 percent last year and 25 percent average. Land prepared for corn and soybeans was rated 2 percent and 1 percent, respectively, unchanged from the previous week. Precipitation received during the week did not significantly impact area rivers. Water levels have receded, but several areas along the Minnesota River are still under flood warning.
