mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 22, 2011 Issue MN-CW-20-11 Agricultural Summary Several consecutive days of warm, dry conditions this past week allowed producers to make significant planting progress, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of May 22, producers rated 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork, the highest number so far this year. Sunny skies helped dry soggy soils and promote crop development. A few reporters noted that farmers were out in full force during the past week. Spring wheat planted advanced 41 percentage points from the previous week to 80 percent planted, and corn advanced 34 points to 81 percent planted. Other crops that advanced at least 49 points from the previous week included barley at 76 percent planted, sugarbeets at 80 percent planted, and canola at 70 percent planted. Soybeans were 38 percent planted, compared to 76 percent last year and 68 percent for the five-year average. Oats were 83 percent planted, compared to 100 percent last year and 94 percent average. Oat condition ratings were 1 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 17 percent excellent. The statewide average temperature was 57.3 degrees, nearly average for the week. Sunny skies and seasonable temperatures prevailed for a greater part of the week; however, several rounds of scattered showers and thunderstorm moved in over the weekend, including reports of localized hail. Thunderstorms generated numerous tornado and funnel cloud reports in and around the Twin Cities Metropolitan area on Sunday. Statewide precipitation was .55 inch above normal. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 1 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 35 percent surplus. Pasture condition was rated 3 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 21 percent excellent, an improvement from the previous week.
