mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 29, 2011 Issue MN-CW-21-11 Agricultural Summary Steady rain and cool, cloudy conditions slowed planting progress, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Many reporters noted that it has been a tough, wet spring for planting. Planting progress was highly variable with only a few available days at a time. Cool temperatures slowed recovery from heavy rains, and many fields were still wet with some ponding. As of May 29, 2.7 days were rated suitable for fieldwork statewide. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 55 percent adequate and 45 percent surplus, compared to 64 percent adequate and 35 percent surplus the previous week. Below average temperatures prevailed again this past week. The statewide average temperature was 55.1 degrees, 4.7 degrees below normal. A frost advisory was in place Thursday for northern areas. Statewide average rainfall was 1 inch, .2 inch above normal. Weekend weather featured plenty of clouds, scattered showers, and localized thunderstorms. Some areas along the Minnesota and Crow Rivers are once again under flood warning from new rainfall. Corn was 88 percent planted, compared to 100 percent last year and 98 percent for the five-year average. In the first condition ratings of the season, corn was rated 3 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Soybeans were 53 percent planted, compared to 93 percent last year and 89 percent average. Small grain planting neared completion with spring wheat and barley at 92 percent planted and oats at 93 percent planted. Pasture condition was rated 3 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 18 percent excellent.
