mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending June 5, 2011 Issue MN-CW-22-11 Agricultural Summary Planting of several field crops advanced significantly or neared completion last week as lower rainfall amounts and the warmest temperatures of the season, particularly in southern Minnesota, allowed producers a state-wide average 4.3 days rated suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA NASS Minnesota Field Office. Soybeans advanced 22 percentage points to 75 percent planted with 38 percent of the crop emerged. Dry beans advanced 21 percentage points to 62 percent planted while sweet corn was 47 percent planted, up from 29 percent a week ago. All three crops remain behind last year's progress and the five-year average. Corn planting neared completion at 95 percent planted. Seventy-nine percent of the corn crop had emerged with 61 percent rated in good condition. Other plantings nearing completion included sugarbeets at 95 percent planted and potatoes at 94 percent planted. Eighty-two percent of spring wheat and 84 percent of barley was emerged with 9 and 4 percent jointing respectively. Oats was 84 percent emerged with 12 percent jointing. Crop conditions for all three small grains were rated in primarily good condition. Twenty-one percent of first cutting alfalfa was harvested, well behind last year and average, but up 19 points from last week. Sixty-one percent of pasture was rated in good condition. Topsoil moisture supplies rated surplus declined from 45 percent to 30 percent following the drier, warmer week, however, wet conditions continue to persist throughout the state. Six percent of the state's topsoil moisture supply was rated surplus a year ago.
