mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending June 19, 2011 Issue MN-CW-24-11 Agricultural Summary Below average temperatures and persistent rainfall continued to delay crop progress behind the five-year average, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of June 19, corn was 98 percent emerged with an average height of 10 inches, compared to 20 inches last year and 18 inches for the five-year average. Soybeans were 89 percent emerged with an average height of 3 inches, compared to 6 inches last year and 5 inches average. Thirty-four percent of spring wheat and 32 percent of barley was jointed, both 28 percentage points behind their respective averages. Oats were 68 percent jointed and 11 percent heading, 22 points behind average. Planting was virtually complete for canola, dry beans, and sunflowers. Corn condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 13 percent excellent while soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 64 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Twenty-six percent of topsoil moisture supplies were rated surplus, compared with 14 percent the previous week. Statewide average precipitation was 1.8 inches. Significant rainfall fell Tuesday into Wednesday over portions of the south. Amounts were heavy at times, and some amounts set new rainfall records including 4.4 inches at Lamberton. Producers, faced with only brief periods of sun and warm temperatures, reported a need for warm, dry weather. Wet field conditions have delayed herbicide applications in areas and contributed to difficulties in haying. Pasture condition was rated 1 percent poor, 11 percent fair, 65 percent good, and 23 percent excellent.
