mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending June 26, 2011 Issue MN-CW-25-11 Agricultural Summary Heavy, frequent rains, combined with cool temperatures, contributed to delays in crop development behind the five-year average, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Reporters noted that, with little time to dry out between rains, soils were saturated and many fields had standing water. Wet conditions delayed herbicide application in areas and caused difficulties cutting and harvesting the first crop of alfalfa. Statewide, 1.8 days were rated suitable for fieldwork as of June 26. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 50 percent adequate and 50 percent surplus. Average precipitation for the state was 2.0 inches with totals reaching up to 4.1 inches at Canby and 3.8 inches at Faribault. Temperatures were 4.2 degrees below normal. Corn average height was 16 inches, 13 inches below the five-year average, and condition was rated 24 percent fair and 57 percent good. Soybeans emerged advanced 8 percentage points from last week to 97 percent, and were 5 inches tall, compared with 8 inches average. Small grain development remained behind average. Spring wheat was 62 percent jointing and 10 percent headed, while barley was 45 percent jointing and 10 percent headed. Oats were 76 percent jointing and 25 percent headed, compared to 60 percent headed average. Small grains were rated primarily in fair to good condition. Alfalfa first cutting was 80 percent complete, compared to 83 percent last year and 86 percent average. Pasture condition was rated 2 percent poor, 10 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 28 percent excellent.
